William "Al" Slaughter was lying in his bed at George Washington University Hospital yesterday afternoon when a familiar set of black shoes appeared in his room. He looked up and saw a pair of intense, espresso-colored eyes -- and he knew the man standing before him was the one who saved his life. Floyd Lipscomb, 47, pulled Slaughter out of the 38-degree Washington Channel on the Southwest waterfront after Slaughter fell in late Monday night. Lipscomb was aided by two homeless men and a D.C. harbor patrol officer in the rescue. ....

Curing fear of the dentist

SEATTLE -- Twenty percent of the U.S. population avoids going to the dentist because they are afraid. But a special clinic for dental-phobics uses medication, calming methods, and an interactive computer program to take the bite out. Dental drills ... They sound and look scary -- so scary they keep phobic patients like Steve Brown out of the dental chair. "I used all kinds of excuses to miss appointments," he said. "In a nutshell, I was fired by my periodontist." So Brown came to the University of Washington's Dental Fears Research Clinic. There, dentists tailor treatment to each patient using both medication and behavioral therapy. "The basic concept is that people ought to be able to take control of this problem themselves, "Peter Milgrom, D.D.S., director of Dental Fears Research Clinic explained....

WASHINGTON — Seeking a new course in the grinding war in Iraq, President Bush met Monday with former Secretary of State James Baker and other members of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group that is assessing options. Bush said "I'm not going to prejudge" the report the panel will issue, but he said the goal remains an Iraq "that can sustain, govern and defend itself and serve as an ally in this war on terror." The group - Baker, former Democratic congressman Lee Hamilton, eight other members, and an array of expert advisers - is expected to make recommendations by year's end. Calling on the sage advice of seasoned wise men is an honored White House tradition. The group's key members have led distinguished careers with track records of accomplishment and good judgment....

Check your medicine cabinet: Millions of bottles of the widely used pain reliever acetaminophen -- some sold as long as three years ago -- are being recalled because they may contain metal fragments. The recall affects 11 million bottles containing varying quantities of 500-milligram acetaminophen caplets made by the Perrigo Co. The pills were sold under store brands by Wal-Mart, CVS, Safeway and more than 120 other major retailers, the Food and Drug Administration said. At least two chains -- CVS Corp. and SuperValu Inc. -- started pulling the pills from store shelves Thursday. ....

Reducing Breast Cancer Risk in Offspring

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- A new study reveals eating whole wheat during pregnancy could reduce the risk of breast cancer. The research was done in rats, but researchers say the results suggest it might be beneficial for pregnant women to try to include whole wheat in their diets. Previous research has suggested daughters of mothers who ate a high-fat diet were at a greater risk of breast cancer. This new study done at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., looked at what dietary factors could reduce the risk of breast cancer in offspring. For the study, investigators fed rats a diet with 6 percent fiber from whole wheat flour, oat flour, defatted flax flour or cellulose. The cellulose was used as a control. The offspring were given a breast cancer-inducing chemical....

Exit polls: War, corruption, balance of power moved voters

Republicans lost their advantage among voters most worried about terrorism, exit polls found, depriving the GOP of the issue that was key to its success in the last two elections. President Bush and Republican congressional candidates frequently cited the fight against terrorism in the midterm campaign, trying to overcome public anger about the war in Iraq. They argued that Iraq was central to the terror fight. More than seven in 10 questioned after casting ballots Tuesday said terrorism was important in their vote, and they divided their vote between Republicans and Democrats. In the 2004 presidential election, Bush had almost a 20-point advantage over Democrat John Kerry on handling terrorism. Republicans held a big advantage on that issue for several years after the terror attacks of Sept....

Local police and Liquor Control officials had their hands full at Autzen Stadium Saturday, with the University of Oregon's rivalry football game against the Washington Huskies. One OLCC official told us they were staying pretty busy at Saturday's game, but law enforcement officials are not the only ones trying to keep control of fans in the stands."I've seen some rowdy stuff, but I've seen consistent spirit, win or lose," says junior Rob Morse. "We've got the best fans in the Pac-10, probably the best fans in the nation."There's no question that game day at the University of Oregon has a party atmosphere, but even as The Duck pumps up the fans, the university is trying to make sure the party stays under control. This is the first year of the UO Athletic Department's "Code of ConDUCKt," which uses webbed footprints and other signage to remind fans to be good sports. The Athletic Department isn't the only University group that's tackling the conduct issue....
