“Hail! Hail! to Michigan, the leaders and best... Hail! Hail! to Michigan, the champions of the West!” Are the key lines of the University of Michigan fight song.

Famous for their “winged” football helmet, dated back to the days of coach Herbert O. "Fritz" Crisler, who invented this design, this University of Michigan helmet is one of the most recognizable icons in college sports, and other University of Michigan sports teams are using this design as well.

The University of Michigan was re-founded in Ann Arbor in 1837, and have been known ever since as one of the the most progressive university in the United States.

Until today, it is one of the largest leading universities. And for more recent events, 2 former students of the University of Michigan are participating in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.

Area forests threatened by yet another invasive species - beech ...

Strolling through the many hardwood stands of northern Michigan is something Little Traverse Conservancy executive director Tom Bailey does often. He sees the diverse browns, tans, grays and blacks of tree trunks, hears the calls of many birds; takes in the life-force of the forest. It is something, Bailey said, not to be taken lightly. Something that he knows too well can vanish, and not just through development. As more and more exotic species spread in the wilderness, more trees begin to die out in large numbers. For those who didnt live through the Chestnut Blight or the Dutch Elm Disease in the early and mid-20th century, all one has to do is to look at the devastation being unleashed by Emerald Ash Borer across parts of Michigan today to realize that the threats posed by exotic species represent a clear and present danger to the health of our forests and the vitality and beauty of our landscape, Bailey said....

YPSILANTI -- Eastern Michigan University inaugurates its new University Art Gallery with "Leapin' Lizards," a major exhibition of comic art -- that's cartoons, comic books and comic strips -- spanning nearly 100 years. "Leapin Lizards" was curated by EMU art history professor Richard Rubenfeld, who teaches courses in popular culture and vigorously defends its importance. "I've never been one to compare a Superman page to a Leonardo da Vinci," Rubenfeld said. Nevertheless, he understands popular culture as communicating ringing truths about American society, values and history. Visitors to the exhibit will likely leave it sharing his view. The University Art Gallery, located in EMU's new Student Center, encompasses more than 1,500 square feet....

"You were requested to go out and oppose Proposal 2 publicly," said Claudia Gonzalez, a member of the Radical Chicano Student Union, addressing President Lou Anna Simon. ....

University of Michigan Index Stays Near 15-Month High (Update2)

Nov. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Confidence among U.S. consumers stayed close to the highest level in 15 months in November, supported by cheap gasoline and an expanding labor market. The University of Michigan's preliminary index of consumer sentiment fell to 92.3, from 93.6 in October, a level that was the highest since July 2005. Before today, the measure had averaged 88.1 since monthly data were first compiled in 1978. High spirits may keep Americans spending, helping the economy withstand a housing slump that contributed to the slowest pace of growth in three years last quarter. Consumers, who endured a barrage of negative political ads during the election campaign, got a boost from the least expensive gasoline since December and the lowest unemployment rate in five years....

PHILADELPHIA - Central Michigan has already matched last season's win total. The next goal is to continue playing beyond the regular season. Dan LeFevour threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth as Central Michigan beat Temple 42-26 on Saturday. Ontario Sneed accounted for 233 yards of total offense and four touchdowns for the Chippewas (6-3), who won their fourth straight to become eligible for a bowl game. Central Michigan hadn't won six games over Division I-A opponents in back-to-back years since 1984-85. The Chippewas went 6-5 last year but didn't receive a berth in a bowl game. "I think it's great," LeFevour said. "Another good thing about this season is we've still got three games to go. We want to keep playing. We're still not satisfied with where we are." LeFevour was 18-of-22 for 268 yards....
