University of Maryland – proudly wear the red, white, black, and gold
Posted Sunday, February 19, 2006 12:09:11 PM by Kate Grant

“Fight, fight, fight for Maryland, honor now her name again, push up the score, keep on fighting for more, for Maryland, go terps!” This University of Maryland fight song was written in 1941 and is one of the University of Maryland traditional songs.

The University of Maryland is celebrating its 150th Anniversary this year. One of the University of Maryland traditions, that faded with the years, occurred between the 1920's and the 1960's, where freshman students of the University of Maryland were under the obligation to wear beanies, caps known as "rat caps" for the men, and "rabbit caps" for the women, everywhere they went on campus, all year long, until the freshmen-sophomore tug-of-war in the spring semester.

This tradition is long gone, but others, like the University of Maryland “Midnight Madness” still exist. This tradition was created in 1970, when the basketball team coach made his team run around the track around the Byrd Stadium at midnight of the first official day of team practice.

Since then this has become a highly anticipated University of Maryland event, covered in the media across the country.

The University of Maine men rode hot shooting throughout the game, balanced scoring and solid, man-to-man defensive pressure to a 70-56 basketball victory over the University of Maryland Baltimore County at Alfond Arena Tuesday night. Kevin Reed's 19 points led the Black Bears, who won their second straight America East contest to improve to 2-4 in league play and 7-11 overall. UMBC drops to 6-12 (2-3). Brian Hodges continued his hot play off the bench for the Retrievers by scoring a game-high 26 points. The Bears' hot shooting continued in the second half. They used 7-0 and 9-2 runs within a five-minute span midway through the second half to lead by as many as 22 points and seize control of the game for good. As they have for six straight America East games, the Bears came out on target and stayed that way in the first half....

It's special time for woman given a second chance

A woman wearing dainty pearls and polished brown shoes recently took her family on a road trip, to the Poughkeepsie park where she slept when she was homeless, contemplated suicide and strangers touched her life. In 1986, Jennifer Kerr was an abused young woman and an alcoholic addicted to cocaine. She went from living with her family in the Town of Wappinger to living in Waryas Park. "I don't know why I'm alive. I don't know why this happened. I know it was real, but I'm standing here and I can't believe that was my life," an emotional Kerr said during her recent visit to Waryas Park from her home in Maryland. The only evidence the 41-year-old woman who stood in a wooded section of the park this month was the woman who thought of it as her home 20 years ago was the tears that streamed down her face....

Familiar Steps at the End of Campaign Trail

The maneuvers that Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and Democratic challenger Martin O'Malley have employed in the final days of the 2006 campaign have a hint of familiarity to them. Ehrlich will spend his last hours of campaigning cajoling support from African Americans at a church service this morning in Prince George's County, as he had in 2002. And he will hold a rally today with former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, as he had the Sunday before the election four years ago. ....

Speaker-to-be Pelosi reflects rise of women
Posted Thursday, November 09, 2006 11:43:59 AM by Blog57 Team
Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is set to become the first female speaker of the House of Representatives, shattering what she has described as ``not a glass ceiling, but a marble ceiling'' in the halls of Congress. With Democrats winning control of the House, Pelosi will stand second in line to the presidency. She will take office in January when the 110th Congress convenes and newly sworn-in members cast their votes for speaker on the House floor. Donna Brazile, who managed Al Gore's presidential campaign in 2000 and now teaches government at Georgetown University, said Pelosi's elevation would reverberate throughout the nation's political system. ``For centuries, the elevator for women in American politics has been stuck in the lobby,'' Brazile said....

A University of Maryland proposal to send the Deep Impact spacecraft on an extended mission to get a close-up look at Comet Boethin has cleared the biggest step in a two-step NASA approval process. On October 30, the space agency announced that two proposals to use the Deep Impact's flyby spacecraft for new missions were among the three "missions of opportunity" proposals chosen to provide detailed concept studies that NASA will use in the final selection process. The proposed Deep Impact follow-on missions are called DIXI and EPOCh. The Maryland-led Deep Impact eXtended Investigation (DIXI) seeks to use the surviving Deep Impact spacecraft and its three working instruments (two color cameras and an IR spectrometer) for a extended flyby of Comet Boethin. The Extrasolar Planet Observations and Characterization (EPOCh) mission would use the high resolution camera on the Deep Impact flyby craft to search for Earth-sized planets around other stars....
