Two hours before last week's BCS national championship showdown in Glendale, Ariz., the University of Florida football players and coaches were milling around in their locker room, quietly preparing for pregame warmups. Head coach Urban Meyer called on RV Brown, the Gators' team chaplain, for a few words of insight and inspiration. Even Meyer was astonished by what he heard. What RV Brown said was: How does it feel to be a bunch of losers? Because that's what you are, you know. Losers. That's what everybody's saying. They're saying you have no business being here. They're saying Ohio State ought to be playing Southern Cal or Michigan. They're saying you barely beat Tennessee and barely beat LSU. They're saying your were lucky to beat Alabama and South Carolina and Florida State....

Gators Head West This Morning

If Gator fans think the school will be rolling in the dough due to the upcoming national championship game a spokesperson at University of Florida says that is not the case. The school gets nearly $2.25 million immediately from the Southeastern Conference for travel expenses. However, the school says its expenses are nearly $3 million. UF is borrowing against the expected bowl revenue to pay for the rest of the trip. In June, the SEC will distribute another $2 million dollars to its member schools from the bowl revenue. The school is also expecting millions of dollars in merchandising royalties. The school does not expect to see any of that money though until the second financial quarter of 2007. ....

TAMPA - Minutes after the University of South Florida's 27-10 dismantling of Syracuse on Saturday at Raymond James Stadium, it was apparent what was on the minds of the Bulls: bring on the birds. USF (7-3, 3-2 Big East) visits No. 10 Louisville (8-1, 3-1) Saturday at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals, who were hoping for a shot at a national title, could be reeling from Thursday's 28-25 upset at Rutgers. They'll also look to avenge last year's 45-14 blowout loss at USF. "The biggest thing is we've got to go up and do what no one thinks we probably will have a shot to do, beat Louisville at their place," USF coach Jim Leavitt said. "I imagine we'll go up and give it a try. "We have our hands full with Louisville. Somehow we have to put a game plan together and get some guys to go up there with confidence and play a football game." The Bulls are bowl eligible and, if they win at Louisville and West Virginia on Nov....

A donor has withdrawn a $20-million pledge to Florida International University, in Miami, after he says he was insulted by the institution's president, reports The Miami Herald. Herbert Wertheim, a university trustee who made his fortune in eye care, had made a pledge that would allow the institution to establish a medical school. The loss of the gift means that the university has also lost a state matching gift that would have provided an additional $20-million. However, the institution says it believes other donors will be willing to provide the $20-million needed for the school. Mr. Wertheim withdrew the pledge after the president of the university, Modesto Maidique told him that he was getting naming rights for the school "on the cheap" and that the university "could now get $100 million for it," according to a letter the Mr....

Rutgers Reverses Football Infamy With Locals, Florida Imports

Nov. 9 (Bloomberg) -- The Rutgers University football team started out going backward. It's taken 137 years to change direction. In the sport's very first game, a Rutgers victory over Princeton in 1869, one of the winning players mistakenly tried to score for the opposition, kicking at his own goalposts. That was followed by decades of losing before half-filled stands. Now, Rutgers, New Jersey's state university, is a hot ticket -- undefeated in eight games and ranked 15th in the nation. The coach who directed the turnaround, with talent from local towns and Florida hotbeds, even delivers pizzas to waiting fans, who will cheer on the Scarlet Knights tonight in what may be their biggest game since the dawn of the sport. ``It was pandemonium,'' said Julio Barrera-Oro....

Students protest at Florida Tech

Florida Tech business students and several faculty members are protesting today the firing of the School of Business Dean David Steele and an online business program that is currently being developed for the university. Students say all that will be required for an online degree is a high school diploma and students being 22 years of age or older. They say it dilutes the value of degrees obtained on campus. Faculty members say Steele was fired after bringing his concerns about the online program to the board of trustees. They say academic freedom and shared governance are sacrosanct principles in a university environment. University officials say there is already on online MBA program and that admission standards have not yet been created for the undergraduate program, which is scheduled to begin in January 2008....
