New software can identify noisy planes at Don Scott
Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 3:14:31 PM by Blog57 Team
For years, the planes that rattled windows and woke neighbors of Ohio State Universitys Don Scott Field were anonymous annoyances. But a new computer system will mean the next time a jet blasts over, residents will be able to log in to an airport Web site and identify the plane before they file a complaint with the airport. Called WebScene, the program allows its users to see a map marked with the path of nearly every aircraft in the air near Don Scott. Click on a plane and its identifying information and flight plan appear on the screen. A nearby form allows a quick and accurate complaint to be filed. The system can be accessed on the Internet through the Noise Management section of the airports home page: www.osuairport.org. Airport officials hope the program addresses some concerns of the citizens group We Oppose Ohio State Airport Expansion, which said in a report last year that the airport has mismanaged previous noise-complaint systems and failed to maintain its records....

Nov. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Rutgers University moved into the top 10 of the Associated Press college football writers poll for the first time in school history, rising to seventh, while Ohio State remained No. 1 for the 12th straight week. Rutgers (9-0), whose previous ranking of 15th was tied for its best ever, upset unbeaten Louisville 28-25 on Nov. 9 to climb eight spots. Louisville dropped to 10th from third with the loss. Ohio State (11-0) beat Northwestern 54-10, earning 64 of 65 first-place votes. On Nov. 18, the Buckeyes will host second- ranked Michigan, which raised its record to 11-0 with a 34-3 win at Indiana. The Wolverines earned the only other first-place vote. Florida (9-1), which edged South Carolina 17-16, rose three spots to No....

Bottled Beer--Ohio State University

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Three convenience stores near the Ohio State campus have stopped selling glass bottles of domestic beer at the university's request. Glass bottles are dangerous in the hands of revelers that may have had one too many. And broken glass in the streets of campus neighborhoods is a hazard. The university official that has led the effort says the request focuses on domestic brands because students drink cheap beer. The chairman of the Board of Trustees' academic and student affairs committee says the move could help as the university prepares for the much-anticipated showdown against arch-rival Michigan in two weeks. The United Dairy Farmers stores are all located on High Street....

Hype for Michigan, Ohio State game overshadows Badgers, rest of Big Ten

MADISON -- Do the University of Wisconsin football players care about the impending Michigan vs. Ohio State showdown on Nov. 18? Yes and no. Some players just don't have the time to watch other games. Others, meanwhile, are tired about how the Big Ten is perceived as the Big Two and other nine -- despite Wisconsin's impressive 9-1 record. And finally, some care because it is the latest in a series of the "Game of the Century," and this one is better because it involves two Big Ten schools. "After a victory, I like to go home and celebrate by watching other college football games," said UW linebacker Mark Zalewski, a Wausau East graduate. "It is fun to watch the teams ranked ahead of us." If Wisconsin defeats Iowa on Saturday, the loser of the Ohio State/Michigan battle, will be tied with the Badgers for second place in the conference, assuming the Buckeyes defeat Northwestern and Michigan wins against Indiana this Saturday....

Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Ohio State and the University of Michigan remained the top two teams in college football's Bowl Championship Series after narrow wins, while undefeated Louisville climbed two spots to third. The Buckeyes, who edged Illinois 17-10 to improve to 10-0 on the season, have a BCS grade of .987, while the Wolverines (10-0) got past Ball State 34-26 to earn a .971 grade. Ohio State will play host to Michigan on Nov. 18 in each team's final regular-season game. Louisville (8-0) won 44-34 on Nov. 2 at West Virginia in a battle of unbeaten teams to earn a BCS grade of .891, passing Florida (.802), which remained fourth after a 25-19 win at Vanderbilt. The Mountaineers (.574) fell to 10th from third. The ranking, a compilation of computer ratings and polls, determines which two schools play for the BCS National Championship on Jan....

Ohio State University elevator flunks tests

The elevator that pinned and killed an Ohio State University freshman failed brake tests conducted after the accident at the maximum weight it was supposed to be able to hold, according to a state report released yesterday. State inspectors found the elevator could not hold its 2,500-pound weight limit, and its brake allowed the car to drift to the bottom of the shaft. Andrew Polakowski, 18, of Erie, Pa., suffocated Oct. 20 trying to leave the Stradley Hall elevator that was stuck between floors. He was pinned between the top of the elevator doors and the third floor. Fire officials said the elevator was crowded with 24 people, exceeding its weight capacity by as much as 1,100 pounds. ....
